South Korean baritone Hyungjin Son is currently in his first year as a member of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program at LA Opera. He has been praised for his “beautiful and well-controlled voice” and his “large, bronze-toned baritone.” He received acclaim for his portrayal of the title role in Don Giovanni at the Merola Opera Program.

During the 2024–25 season, he made his Pittsburgh Opera debut as the Bonze in Madama Butterfly. At LA Opera, he made his company debut as Yamadori in Madama Butterfly and also appeared as Gregorio in Roméo et Juliette. Other roles with LA Opera include Maestro in Ainadamar and Marullo in Rigoletto.

His previous performance credits include Marullo in Rigoletto, Maestro in Ainadamar, Falke in Die Fledermaus, Giove in La Calisto, the Bonze in Madama Butterfly, the title role in Don Giovanni, Doristo in L’arbore di Diana, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Mr. Putnam in If I Were You, "Pa" Zegner in Proving Up, and Sir Thomas in Mansfield Park.

As a concert soloist, he has performed Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor with the NEC Philharmonia at Jordan Hall, and Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem with the BU Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall.

In 2022, he was a studio artist at the Aspen Music Festival, where he covered the role of Ford in Falstaff (with Sir. Bryn Terfel in the title role), as well as the title role in Don Giovanni.

He was named a national semi-finalist in the 2023 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, a district winner in 2022, and received an encouragement award in 2020 in the Boston District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from Seoul National University, a Graduate Certificate from the Opera Institute at Boston University, and a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory of Music.
